Getting There
Fly to Bagdogra Airport (IXB) then Jeep or taxi to Darjeeling (3 hours, ~₹2,500 for a shared Jeep). Or take the overnight train from Kolkata to New Jalpaiguri (NJP) then Jeep. The Toy Train from NJP takes 7-8 hours and is UNESCO-listed. AirAsia flies to major Indian cities from Bangkok and KL.

I reached the Makaibari estate at the beginning of the first flush season — March, when the tea bushes put out their first tender shoots of the year and the muscatel character that makes Darjeeling famous concentrates in those earliest leaves. The estate manager walked me through the plucking, the withering, the rolling, and the firing, and I tasted the output from the same bushes I had watched being harvested two hours earlier. It is one of the great food experiences in India, and Makaibari has been producing first flush tea since 1881.

Darjeeling sits at 2,042 metres in the West Bengal Himalayas, built by the British as a sanatorium — a retreat from the Bengal heat — in the 1840s and 50s. The colonial architecture is still largely intact: the Windamere Hotel has been hosting guests since 1939, the Planters’ Club still holds events in its Victorian rooms, and the narrow-gauge railway the British built in 1881 to bring goods up from the plains is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city has the particular atmosphere of a hill station that was purpose-built for leisure and has never entirely stopped.

The mountains are the other point of being here. On clear mornings — best in October-November and March-April — Kanchenjunga stands 107km away, 8,586 metres of snow and rock that appears to hover above the horizon. Tiger Hill at dawn is the standard viewing point: Jeeps leave Darjeeling at 4am for the 11km drive, and on clear days both Kanchenjunga and the distant summit of Everest are visible as the light builds. The clouds win more often than not. When they don’t, the view is extraordinary.

The Toy Train — the DHR steam locomotive that runs the Joy Ride circuit from Darjeeling to Ghoom and the Batasia Loop — is the best two hours you can spend in the hills. The loop is a spiral of track built because the gradient was too steep for straight descent, and the war memorial at the loop has Kanchenjunga as its backdrop. The steam whistle echoes off the ridge above town. Book at the station in the morning.

The Arrival

Tea harvested at dawn, the Toy Train whistling above the cloud line, and Kanchenjunga on clear mornings — Darjeeling earned its reputation.

Why Darjeeling deserves your attention

Darjeeling offers three things available nowhere else: the world’s most famous tea at its source (including estate tours during the harvest), a UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge railway still running on steam, and mountain views of Kanchenjunga that, on clear days, are among the finest available from any town in the world.

The colonial hill station atmosphere — the wooden hotels, the walking paths, the mist, the tea gardens on every hillside — is genuine rather than manufactured. Darjeeling is a working town that has been receiving visitors for 150 years and wears it lightly.

What To Explore

A UNESCO steam railway, tea estate tours during harvest, and mountain views that are among the finest in the world from a town.

What should you do in Darjeeling?

Toy Train Joy Ride (DHR Steam Locomotive) — The UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge railway runs a 2-hour heritage steam circuit from Darjeeling to Ghoom (India’s highest railway station at 2,258m), the Batasia Loop, and back. Book at Darjeeling station on the day (₹1,490 for the heritage steam experience). The full NJP to Darjeeling journey (7–8 hours) is also possible for those wanting the complete experience.

Tea Estate Tours — Happy Valley Tea Estate (15 minutes from the town center) offers free tours during the harvest and processing season. Makaibari Tea Estate (7km, the world’s first certified organic tea garden) offers tours and homestay accommodation on the estate. Book Makaibari directly; they are frequently sold out.

Tiger Hill Sunrise — Jeeps depart from Darjeeling at 4am for the 11km drive to Tiger Hill, where Kanchenjunga and (on exceptional clear days) Everest are visible at sunrise. ₹300–500 per person. Best October–November and March–April. Cloudy mornings are common — manage expectations accordingly.

Batasia Loop and War Memorial — The spiral of railway track built to manage the steep grade, with Kanchenjunga as backdrop on clear days. The memorial honours Gorkha soldiers from the Indian Army. Free entry to the loop; the Toy Train passes through it.

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute — Founded in 1954 after Tenzing Norgay summited Everest with Hillary from Darjeeling, the HMI museum covers Himalayan mountaineering history with Tenzing’s own equipment on display. Entry ₹200. Tenzing’s grave is nearby.

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park — The only zoo in India specialising in alpine fauna: snow leopard, red panda, Himalayan wolf, and Tibetan wolf. Adjacent to the HMI. Entry ₹200.

✈️ Scott's Darjeeling Tips
 • Getting There: Fly to Bagdogra (IXB) then shared Jeep to Darjeeling (3 hours, ₹200–300 for shared, ₹2,500 for private). Or overnight train from Kolkata to New Jalpaiguri (NJP) then Jeep. The Toy Train from NJP takes 7–8 hours — beautiful but slow.
 • Best Time: March–April (first flush harvest, rhododendrons) and October–November (clearest mountain views). Avoid June–August: heavy monsoon, landslides on mountain roads, and low visibility.
 • Money: INR. Budget ₹1,500–2,500/day ($18–30 USD). Darjeeling is one of India's more affordable hill stations. Tea estate tours are often free; the Toy Train Joy Ride is ₹1,490.
 • Don't Miss: A morning at Makaibari Tea Estate during first flush — watching the picking and tasting the freshly processed tea the same day is one of the great food travel experiences available in India.
 • Avoid: Buying tea at souvenir shops without checking provenance — much of what is sold as "Darjeeling" contains blended or lower-grade tea. Buy directly from the estates (Makaibari, Happy Valley, Margaret's Hope sell direct).
 • Local Phrase: "Ek cup Darjeeling chiya paaucho?" (EK cup dar-JEE-ling CHEE-ya PAA-oo-cho) — Can I get a cup of Darjeeling tea? In the hills, the answer is always yes.

The Food

Momos, thukpa, and Darjeeling tea at source — the hill station food culture mixes Nepali, Tibetan, and Bengali traditions.

Where should you eat in Darjeeling?

Where to Stay

Colonial hill station hotels with fireplaces, mountain views, and afternoon tea — or a tea estate homestay for the full Darjeeling experience.

Where should you stay in Darjeeling?

Budget (₹800–2,500/night, ~$10–30 USD): Dekeling Hotel and Revolver Hotel (near the Toy Train station) are the established budget options with Kanchenjunga views from the windows. Makaibari Estate homestays are also in this range and include tea estate access.

Mid-range (₹3,000–7,000/night, ~$36–84 USD): Cedar Inn and Elgin Darjeeling are the colonial-character mid-range options. The Windamere Hotel (₹5,000–8,000) is Darjeeling’s most atmospheric property — Victorian furniture, fireplaces, and a sense of the 1940s still present.

Luxury (₹10,000–25,000+/night, ~$120–300+ USD): Glenburn Tea Estate (15km from Darjeeling) is the most extraordinary option — a working tea estate with colonial bungalow accommodation, full board, and guided estate experiences. One of India’s finest heritage stays.

Before You Go

Three nights minimum — one for the Toy Train, one for a tea estate, one for Tiger Hill. Come during first flush if possible.

When is the best time to visit Darjeeling?

March–April for first flush tea harvest and rhododendron blooms — the estates come to life, the landscape is vivid, and the air is crisp. October–November for the clearest mountain views — post-monsoon clarity brings Kanchenjunga out of cloud most mornings.

June–September is the monsoon: heavy rain, frequent landslides on mountain roads, and virtually no mountain visibility. The tea gardens are deeply green and atmospheric but travel is difficult.
